<p>I love my morning meditation. It helps me to create serenity and tackle daily challenges without getting frantic or terribly upset. The visualizations assist me in creating joy and abundance in my life.</p>
<p>Most mornings I sit in bed for 15 &#8211; 20 minutes and clear my mind. I focus on my breath then ground and center myself. After that I stay (or try to stay) in the present moment for several minutes. Then I visualize what I want in my life. It may be something to do with my business, a relationship, my health, money, anything I want to shift in my life.</p>
<p>When I meditate I seem to be able to handle the curve balls life throws at me more easily. I feel grounded, centered and able to determine what is necessary to resolve the issues. Some days it is easy to clear my mind, other days it is very difficult. Some days thought after thought just keeps coming in such as my to-do list, what happened yesterday, determining how to finish the project on time, etc. Does that ever happen to you &#8211; you can&#8217;t quiet your mind? I picture these thoughts as clouds drifting by on a windy day. Finally I get myself to a more peaceful place with no clouds in the sky. Whether it is only for a few seconds or several minutes I feel calmer and happier.</p>
<p>Once my mind is quiet I begin to visualize what I want in life or my business. For instance if I want better communication with a family member I see the two of us talking to each other and responding respectfully. I visualize where we are, the tone of our voices, the time of day, so I am engaging all of my senses. I imagine feeling compassion and empathy for the person. I see us talking and ending the conversation with smiles and hugs. I also use this technique for physical issues such as painful muscles/joints. The imagery is very different but the premise is the same, imagine what you want and the brain starts to make changes toward manifesting it.   Sometimes I feel a positive change after one meditation other times it may take days or months but a change for the better usually occurs.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Not until I studied energy medicine did I realize how easily we are affected by each other’s energy fields. As an RN working in the hospital or home care I cared for patients that were happy, sad, angry, depressed, joyful, and every emotion you can think of. Some days I would come home feeling energized, happy and ready to enjoy my family. Some days I came home feeling drained, exhausted physically and emotionally and just wanted to sit alone or watch mindless TV. After studying energy medicine I realized that sometimes I was taking on other people’s energy or giving my energy to them to try and alleviate their suffering. This had been done all unconsciously of course. Now that I was aware of it I could do something about it.</p>
<p>I learned techniques on how to stop myself from taking on negative energy and how to send universal healing energy, not my own energy, to others. One method of protecting my energy field is to place 2 drops of white angelica essential oil blend in my hands and then run them through my aura. This raises my vibration and protects my field.</p>
<p>I remember one particularly challenging home care case with a woman who was very angry and negative about most things. Before entering her room I made sure I was very well grounded and sent her healing energy from Mother Earth and the Divine. When she started with negative conversation I would shift her attention to a happy memory. This allowed us to have some periods of normal conversation. She began to trust me and allow me to do the necessary procedures for her. Her caregivers also said she was less angry and more cooperative. She experienced longer periods of peacefulness and happiness. At the end of the day I felt good and energized instead of drained or exasperated. It was a win-win for both of us!</p>

We had whales 100 yards out breeching (coming up and out of the water), slapping the water with their pectoral fin and just plain showing off –it was AWESOME! The guide placed a microphone into the sea at one point so we could hear the whales singing. The whale will position itself upside down at a 45 degree angle and “sing”. The sound is beautiful and haunting. No one understands the meaning of this communication yet. The behavior that is documented is a whale sings, another comes up and then they go their separate ways. The whale that approached the singing one then continues on to another singer, disrupting that song and the whales’ part. After studying the vocalizing and behavior of the whales for over 20 years we still do not know what it means.</p>
<p>I feel like our bodies are the same way. We understand a great deal about them yet when we have pain we do not always understand what it is trying to communicate to us. That chronic back pain you are experiencing can have a physical cause but the emotional disconnect of doing a job you hate or not being your true self with others can intensify it or make it continue even if the physical cause is corrected. How do you feel when you have a cold? Tired and low energy, irritable or can’t think clearly? That’s because your energy system is out of balance which decreases your vibration. Your energy system is composed of 3 major parts: the energy field around you (aura), energy centers (chakras) and energy tracks (meridians). Every living thing has a physical body and a subtle energetic body. Your energy system holds all of your life experiences: physical, mental, emotional and spiritual, including traumatic events. When you do not process or let go of negative events your energy system becomes clogged or compromised and energy can no longer flow freely. This decreases your vibration and affects your life force (also referred to as chi, prana or soul). When your energy system is out of balance that is when physical, emotional or mental symptoms occur.</p>
<p>Studies have shown that changes happen in your energy system <em><span style="text-decoration: underline;">before</span></em> symptoms or illness develop. By working with your energy system to bring it back into balance and harmony your body can help to heal itself. Aromatherapy is a wonderful tool to help your energy system stay balanced and something I use every day as part of my self-care regimen.</p>
<p>The body’s normal vibrational range is 62-68 megahertz, this is considered healthy. Someone with a cold is at 58 megahertz. People with cancer vibrate in the low 40s range.   Each essential oil has its own vibration as well, ranging from 52 – 320 megahertz. When we use an oil or oil blend we take in the higher vibration which affects our energy system and assists it to come back into balance. When it is balanced we feel healthy, vibrant, happy and energized.</p>
<p>When I start to feel fatigued during the day or develop a scratchy throat I know my vibration has decreased. I start applying oils topically or take them internally to raise my vibration and boost my immune system. I use Melaleuca alternifolia,  to help my energy system come back into balance while assisting my immune system to fight off unwanted bacteria and viruses.</p>
<p>I start using the oils when I notice any downward shift in my energy level or develop the smallest symptom. Usually by the next day or two I feel good again!</p>

Inflammation is necessary and good for us for short periods of time. When you are injured or get an infection the inflammatory process comes to the rescue to fight off invaders and help our bodies to heal. . When you have a cold and develop a fever that is your immune system causing heat and inflammation to kill the virus or bacteria. When you cut yourself and the area becomes swollen, warm, and red your immune system is at work keeping bacteria out and helping the healing process. As healing occurs the inflammation process stops.</p>
<p>Chronic inflammation is not good for you. Constant low grade inflammation destroys the balance in your body and you become more susceptible to diseases and aging. Chronic stress which causes elevated cortisol levels, poor diet, lack of exercise, smoking and environmental toxins all contribute to chronic inflammation. The list goes on but my space is limited!</p>
<p>For example I noticed a stress pattern in me that continued for almost 20 years before I learned how to change it using holistic therapies. I was a wife and Mom and put everyone’s needs before my own. I would push myself between work, kids, husband and taking care of the house until my back would start hurting or I couldn’t sleep at night. I would get very irritable, feel exhausted, become ill and finally take some time to nourish myself. At this point I was breaking the stress cycle but then I would start the whole cycle over again! My immune system was also depressed and I caught colds often. My asthma also flared up regularly (an inflammatory disease). Since I learned how to manage my stress I am rarely sick, much less irritable and have more energy.</p>
<p>The ugly side of inflammation is that after MANY years in your body it finally manifests with clinical symptoms and disease. Diseases such as diabetes, arthritis, Alzheimer’s, cancer, chronic pain, heart disease, stroke, asthma, thyroid problems and more!. Western medicine will prescribe drugs to decrease or suppress the inflammation but that is not addressing the root cause of the problem and can actually cause more damage to your body.  Just listen to all the potential side effects they talk about in the ads while showing happy, active people. You remember the images, not the words. I have seen firsthand how taking drugs over the long term can adversely affect your health and life. However I know that lifestyle changes are the best way to stop inflammation naturally. That will be addressed in my next post, control inflammation naturally.</p>

Transitions like going from single to married and later on being a Mom. One that I am still experiencing is going from nurse to healer and business owner. This has been the most challenging transformation for me yet. My identity for 30+ years was a nurse. I worked in hospitals, home health agencies and a retirement residence. In many ways I became subservient to physicians, patients and management. When there was a conflict between a doctor and a nurse the doctor was usually not reprimanded, it was the nurse. This taught me being quiet was better than trying to change things. When speaking to patients you had to watch how you said things At times I was even the victim of verbal abuse and NOT just from demented patients! The patients were the consumers and if they responded negatively to a patient satisfaction survey management would call you in for “a talk.” So I learned to walk away and again not express myself. I learned how NOT to stand out because when you did you usually got “in trouble” with management, physicians or other staff members.</p>
<p>Then 2 frozen shoulders put me on disability for a year. During this time I focused on myself and my private healing practice. I started taking classes to learn about how to speak, how to truly express myself and my point of view. It was through this experience that I realized how much I had dimmed my light in order to conform to the “rules”.</p>
<p>I can now be honest, open and compassionately tell people what they need to hear about their health issues and how to change it without fear of losing my job! Speaking the truth is actually doing a great service for the client even if they don’t like what they hear. I was also afraid to take a strong stand about the downside of western medicine because I do not want to alienate that community. What I have learned however is that I need to take a stand so people are clear about who I am and what I stand for in my practice. I need to stand out and be seen in order to reach more people and have a successful business. I know what I have to say is important and can change lives. I am still on this path and relearning how to be less inhibited and fearless like when I was a child.  It is a challenging and fun ride!</p>

The statistics for drug related deaths are staggering. According to the CDC (Center for Disease Control) in 2012  53,175 people in the US died of <strong>unintentional</strong> drug overdose!  More than half of these deaths were due to pain relievers such as Vicodin, Percocet, Oxycontin and anti-anxiety drugs such as Xanax, Valium and Ativan.  Now the American Academy of Neurology has come out with a position statement that states: “Whereas there is evidence for significant short-term pain relief, there is no substantial evidence for maintenance of pain relief or improved function over long periods of time without incurring serious risk of overdose, dependence, or addiction”.   The academy is urging doctors to look for ways other than drugs to help chronic pain patients. They are also urging insurers to pay for some alternative therapies so prescribing drugs is not the default treatment.</p>
<p>I was so THRILLED to read this! Pain must be addressed from many angles to get to the root cause and help people to manage it. Pills mask the symptoms but do nothing to help you make lasting changes. This is where holistic therapies come into play. The combination of therapies I use work together to help your mind, body and spirit come back into balance allowing your body to help heal itself. 										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Our dog Huck has several quirks. One is he does not like the sound of metal on metal, clanking of aluminum ladders or the sound of fans. He becomes very nervous and frequently whimpers or barks when he hears that type of sound even when it is at a low volume. For example if I turn on the fan above the stove he immediately gets up, comes over and whimpers for a short time. If he is upstairs he runs down and stands at attention staring at the stove. However fireworks exploding, sirens on emergency vehicles and other loud noises do not bother him at all.</p>
<p>Another interesting behavior is when I throw any of his toys up the stairs. If the toy does not make it to the landing and rolls back down he runs the other way! Once it is down the stairs he has no problem picking it up and playing with it. If I throw it all the way up to the next landing he will chase after it happily and play with it. I often wonder what kind of life he had before coming to us that created these behaviors.</p>
<p>We found Huck at the animal shelter. He had been abandoned and was very thin when we brought him home. He had high energy but had not been trained or socialized with other dogs so we hired a dog trainer to help us. Stacy was great and we were very sad when she moved out of state. Huck and my family had come a long way with training. He still does not like the noises I mentioned but is more tolerant of them. He learned how to socialize with other dogs and is much more obedient. He has been able to release some of his fears. I will never know what happened to him as a puppy but with love and guidance he settled down and is less fearful.</p>
