There are many essential oils that aid your respiratory system. Nasal congestion from colds or allergies can usually be cleared using essential oils. Peppermint is one of my favorites because it also enhances your immune system helping you to fight off the cold or infection. One method of application that many of my clients and I personally have found useful is tenting. I would use this method only on older children and adults. Put 2 drops of peppermint with 1-2 drops of a eucalyptus oil in a bowl of hot water. Form a tent with a towel and breathe in the vapor for several minutes. Be sure to keep your eyes closed because the menthol in peppermint can be irritating. Another method I like is to put a drop of peppermint oil on my tongue and then hold it to the roof of my mouth. The taste is very stimulating and the vapors go up into the sinuses quickly and help to alleviate congestion. There are several other oils that can also be helpful for congestion.
The Eucalyptus oils are the respiratory tract’s best friend. There are many different types of eucalyptus – Young Living has 6 different types. These oils help to break up mucus and remove it from the lungs. They are also powerful in fighting microbes. Eucalyptus blue is the mildest of all the eucalyptus species. Most of these oils should NOT be taken internally and some can be toxic in large amounts so it is best to consult an aromatherapist for guidance.
Eucalyptus blue , Eucalyptus radiata and Eucalyptus polybractea can be helpful in supporting those with asthma, along with several oil blends that contain these oils. I have asthma and as I have grown older I noticed that sometimes hiking on dry trails my asthma would start to flare up. I started using R.C. or Breath Again oil blends before starting the hike and it rarely flares up now. I apply it topically to my chest or back and my wrists. I always carry my prescribed rescue inhaler IN CASE I need it. Oils are not a substitute for albuterol and other medications.

Having worked with Laurie on energy balancing and guidance on the use of essensial oils, I am headed to my oil stash to try the Peppermint on the tongue because I have been laid low with a cold and congestion. Freer breathing, here I come…
I suggest using the Thieves oil as well to boost your immune system. It has been my personal experience and some of my clients that the cold resolves very quickly when using it 2 – 3 times a day. Feel better!
