There are many ways to help prevent colds/flu naturally. Physicians, pharmacies and drug companies really push the flu vaccine and for some people it is appropriate but not for normally healthy children and adults. The flu vaccine is the “best guess” of what viruses will be coming this winter. Sometimes they guess right and sometimes they guess wrong. If you are elderly, have a depressed immune system or certain chronic conditions then the flu shot can be helpful but it is not a guarantee that you will not get the flu.
The last 5 years of my western nursing career I worked in the Emergency Room. I can’t tell you how many people came in with the flu that received the flu shot. I believe tuning into your body and supporting your own immune system naturally is the best way to get through the cold/flu season. I have taken a flu shot only once (because the hospital said I had to) in the last 10 years and have developed the flu once even though I was exposed to it MANY times during the cold/flu season at work.
Three important things I do to stay healthy involve essential oils. Wash your hands frequently and keep your hands away from your face (mouth and nose particularly). Wash for 10 seconds (about one chorus of row, row, row your boat) with soap and water. DO NOT use antibacterial soap with TRICLOSAN. This is classified as a pesticide and probable carcinogen by the EPA and has been banned in Europe. It can accumulate in your tissues. I use Thieves foaming hand soap with essential oils in my home because it is non-toxic, has a natural ability to protect against bacteria and is economical.
I use essential oils topically and diffuse them in my home to help support my immune system and help my family to stay healthy. There are several oils that can do this. A few examples of single oils are lemon, and Melaleuca alternifolia (tea tree) while Thieves or Melrose are examples of oil blends. I place 1 or 2 drops on my skin daily to help boost my immune system. I also diffuse the oils with a cold-air diffuser in the living room or the bedroom 1 – 4 times a day. This helps to eliminate bacteria and viruses and supports everyone’s immune system. Finding which oil your body desires will give you the most benefit. I test my client’s to find the best oil for their body.
I clean and disinfect surfaces, especially the bathroom to prevent the spread of bacteria. Bacteria tend to accumulate in the bathroom where it is damp and warm. I use Thieves Household Cleaner to clean my entire home because it is non-toxic, plant-based, bio-degradable, smells great and can minimize the spread of bacteria.
