Many years ago my Dad died fairly suddenly and I turned to nature to ease my grief and rejuvenate my soul. About a month after his death my husband and I took a trip to Monterrey. Being on the beach, sitting on rocks or on the sand, watching the waves roll in and out, hearing their powerful sound and smelling the salty air calms me. Sometimes the waves crash in, other times they roll in gently and lap at the shore. I watch the wildlife of birds, sea otters, dolphins and crabs and witness the cycle of life. Walking in the tide pools I am reminded that there is another whole world taking place underneath the sea.
I see a strong parallel with my life – some days I feel very positive, happy, physically strong, have high energy and want to shout my message to the world like the waves crushing into the shore with power. Other days I feel fear, sadness or just low energy and want to go inside to see what lies beneath the surface of my conscious mind and physical body. I am like the waves lapping at the shore.
I know all of this is a cycle, down emotions will transform into happy, joyful ones if I allow it. Experiencing each allows me to feel more alive and I learn something from every experience. Nature restores itself in many ways and restores me. I love being out in nature – it is healing, rejuvenating and speaks to my mind, body and spirit.
Getting outside and into nature is part of my self-care regimen. It could be going to the beach, forest, a city park or my own garden in the backyard. Self-care is a necessity, not a luxury and part of my 7 step system to heal pain. W here do you go to rejuvenate your soul? I would love to hear your story.
