Many people are aware that Lavender oil is very calming. However it can help with many other challenges as well. Did you know Lavender is an adaptogen? The oil is very complex with many different natural constituents, some stimulating and some sedating. The oil works with your body so if you are stressed it will help calm you but if you are feeling fatigued it can help stimulate you, it adapts to what your body needs! Lavender may help prevent falls in the elderly, is good for many skin conditions and much more!
One study done in Japan by Sakamoto Y and others suggests wearing a lavender patch may reduce falls and agitation in the elderly. The study took place over one year, involved 145 skilled nursing facility residents and had a Lavender group and a placebo group. The lavender group had fewer falls and a decrease in agitated behaviors. The study was published in the Journal of American Geriatrics Society in June 2012. If you are caring for a loved one with dementia try diffusing lavender and see if it helps to calm them.
It is fabulous for soothing a sunburn or burn and nourishing the skin. It has saved my skin as well as my husband’s more than once while vacationing! One year while in Hawaii I was floating in a protected pond and talking with a native healer. I was so fascinated with the stories she was telling I did not want to get out and get my sunscreen. When we left the pond I could feel my arm and back radiating heat and knew I was in trouble. When we returned to our room I put several drops of Lavender on the sunburn and gently spread it around. I then sprayed it with Lavaderm spray which contains lavender oil and aloe vera to assist in cooling off. My skin was very red but the burning sensation stopped. The next day I reapplied the spray and the oil in the morning, afternoon and at bedtime. I did the same the following day, then decreased to 2 times a day. I noticed I was running low on the oil so I used it once a day on the arm that was the most red. That arm never peeled but the other one did even though the burn was less severe! The only difference with the care of the 2 arms was stopping the lavender oil sooner.
Lavender oil promotes healing of minor cuts and scrapes and protects them from infection. It has antibacterial and antiseptic properties as evidenced by the aromatogram technique which is one type of recognized standard test used to determine what bacteria the oil is effective against. When I have used it on myself and my family we have not experienced any stinging or pain.
Lavender is very versatile and I carry it in my purse at all times. Have you had an experience with it? I would love to hear about it!
