Being out in a garden feeds me in many ways. It all started when I was a little girl about 8 years old. My grandparents had a friend that owned an organic farm back in Wisconsin. When I went to visit my grandparents they would take me there. I would dig and plant seeds. I would also pick carrots right out of the ground, brush them off and eat them. They were so sweet and crunchy. I loved the feel of the dirt in my hands and the earthy smell of the soil. Back then I liked getting dirty and would sit myself down in between rows of vegetables to pick them.
Unfortunately our house in Calif did not have space for a garden. When my husband and I purchased our first home I made sure it had space for a vegetable garden. I had two 4 by 4 foot boxes and grew many different vegetables. I also had an area for a flower garden, I was in heaven! Gardening whether it is flowers or vegetables feeds my physically, mentally and emotionally. The digging, preparing the soil and planting is good for my body while being outside and connected with the earth keeps me grounded, calm and feeling happy. I also felt that by gardening and composting I was giving back to Mother Earth. Plus the bonus of fresh vegetables that tasted great.
My daughters also enjoyed helping me to plant and pick vegetables. They were about 5 and 7 when they started to help in the garden. They especially liked the tall corn stalks in the summer.
When we moved again I had to give up my vegetable garden but I still have many plants and flowers. I love getting out there weeding, planting and so forth. It still feeds my body and soul. Nurturing yourself is 1 step in alleviating many types of pain. Is there an activity you did as a child that still feeds your body and soul today? I would love to hear about it.
